How to Figure out What Your Talents Are Worth

Compensation is one of my favorite topics. So I was so excited when Andrew Seaman, the Senior Managing Editor for Jobs & Career Development at LinkedIn, invited me to guest on his podcast: Get Hired to talk about Salary Research.

Andrew decided to invite me after reading this post that I made about Salary Research.

We all want to ensure we’re compensated fairly for our work. Let’s be honest; most of us go to work to make the money we need to afford our life. No one wants to be underpaid and no one wants to price themselves out of opportunities. The only way for your salary expectations to be grounded in reality is to lean on the data out there and do your research.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the episode:

📈 Look at multiple sources, including crowd-sourced websites and government databases, to get a sense of industry averages. Be mindful of factors like job roles, levels of experience, and location.

💡 Transparency is crucial. When job postings reveal salary ranges, it provides valuable insights into a company’s budget. Use this info to prepare your negotiation strategy.

🌟 Evaluate your unique value proposition. Be honest about your skills, experience, and contributions.

💬 Feel comfortable discussing salaries with peers. Ask for their opinions, learn from their experiences, and if you’re uncomfortable asking directly, present a range and ask if they think it’s fair.

👥 Your network is a goldmine. Chat with recruiters in your network. They have their finger on the pulse and can offer valuable advice.
